By Robert Seever who was active in Delaware in the 1830's. Unsigned but inscribed top center "Olive aged 6 months".
Olive is an unusual portrait, small, 10 1/4 x 8 inches plus a period grained frame, with the portrait of the child simplified but filling the entire pictorial space. Her expression is well-developed although simply drawn. Her profile is so clearly drawn that it is a single line that carefully seems to trace a projected image. The picture is further enlivened with red and green details : the flowers which she holds and her ribbon necklace. Her yellow dress is printed with a flower design. It is a charming and heartfelt work.
